The first bridge too far may be the procurement philosophy itself. The product appears, at least superficially, to embody the spirit of equal-opportunity minority ownership programs, although the actual procurement motivations remain unknown.
In the end, the device functions largely as advertised. Whether it completely eliminates harmful vibrations from the perimeter subwoofers at the very lowest frequencies remains open to debate, but it does provide a tremendous degree of isolation that would otherwise compromise the structural integrity of the videowall assembly. The difficulty lies not so much in the concept as in the execution.
The system is exceptionally complicated, with an assembly process resembling an IKEA military engineering project. Several mounting holes failed to align with the cabinet structure, requiring improvised repositioning of support members, additional drilling, and field modifications.
The manufacturer initially suggested that the builder had failed to level the structure correctly. The builder, in turn, documented the extensive use of levels, laser alignment equipment, and mechanical levers throughout the entire installation process.
As a result, responsibility for the alignment issues remains disputed.
The project also highlights the challenges of applying highly complex isolation systems to wood-frame structures. The installation lacked the benefit of a solid concrete slab, which would have provided a far more stable foundation for such an elaborate mechanical solution.
Lesson learned: alternative and more straightforward construction methods should be considered whenever a substantial concrete foundation is available. If your theater resides on a second floor or within a wood-frame home, you face a significant engineering challenge before embarking on an elaborate military-style absorption and shock-isolation system for WaveForming, SBA, or Double Bass Array implementations.
Perhaps this explains why naval projects are so frequently associated with schedule overruns and cost escalation. The device ultimately works, even during the most powerful subwoofer passages, but the complexity of the solution may exceed the practical requirements of the application.
No wonder the Navy is so often associated with cost overruns: sometimes the solution becomes considerably more complicated than the problem itself.
